Good afternoon, this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report for Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 1:30 p.m.

Wetsuits, booties and gloves are 25% off, and we have a great women’s selection, so come get warm.

The winds are out of the south-west this afternoon at 10 to 20 knots.

Waves at the Washout are the knee to thigh range, and getting choppy. There is a swell component to the surf now, and there is an occasional waist high closeout set at The Washout as tide drops out. My bet is that it could pick up some to waist high-plus range as the tide comes in around 5 p.m. today.

Tide will be low at 2:04 pm. It’ll be high at 8:14 tonight.

The Edisto Buoy is reading 2.6 t. ft with a average period of 4.7 seconds. We are looking at building south-west wind-swell over the next few days.

The National Weather Service Marine Weather Forecast calls for: ” ATLANTIC HIGH PRESSURE WILL PREVAIL THROUGH THURSDAY. A COLD FRONT WILL PUSH THROUGH THE REGION FROM

THE WEST ON FRIDAY…FOLLOWED BY A RETURN OF HIGH PRESSURE THROUGH THE WEEKEND. A TROUGH MAY DEVELOP ALONG THE SOUTHEAST COAST EARLY NEXT WEEK.

We should see building south wind swell starting today and building through Thursday. Should reach the chest high range in choppy conditions by Friday as a cold front approaches. After the frontal passage, surf looks to get small, with offshore winds, becoming more north-easterly for early week, and some wind chop could be around for Sunday into Monday.

Expect a beautiful afternoon, with a high of 71 under sunny skies.

Sunset is at 6:10 p.m..

Water temperature is around 56*.

Good afternoon, this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report for Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m.

Wetsuits, booties and gloves are 25% off, and we have a great women’s selection, so come get warm.

The winds are out of the east/north-east this afternoon at 10 to 15 knots. Winds are forecast to become south late this afternoon at 5 to 10, hopefully blowing in a bit of this east swell that is currently firing in Fla., even just to our south. But alas, not much here.

Waves at the Washout are the knee to thigh range, and choppy, but the low tide is in it. It could very well pick up to waist high as the tide comes in later in the afternoon.

Low tide was at 1:25 p.m, and the next high tide will be at 7:16 pm.

The Edisto Buoy is reading 3.6 ft with a dominant period of 11 seconds, so there is some ground-swell out there, we just hope some of it will show up at our beaches this afternoon.

The National Weather Service Marine Weather Forecast calls for: “A WEAK COASTAL TROUGH WILL DEVELOP TODAY AND THEN SHIFT OFFSHORE TONIGHT. HIGH PRESSURE WILL PREVAIL THROUGH TUESDAY BEFORE PUSHING OFFSHORE AND WEAKENING WEDNESDAY. A WARM FRONT WILL LIFT NORTH ON THURSDAY…FOLLOWED BY A COLD FRONT SWEEPING THROUGH THE AREA ON FRIDAY. HIGH PRESSURE WILL BUILD IN SATURDAY.”

We’ll see very small choppy east ground swell this afternoon as wind become more onshore, and the tide begins to come in. We should see building south wind swell starting Wednesday afternoon, and building through late week into the chest high range in choppy conditions by Friday. http://www.oceansurfshop.com/report/

It is cloudy at the beach, and 66.

Sunset is just after 6 p.m.

Water temperature is around 56*.

The National Weather Service Marine Weather Forecast as of Monday, Feb 20 calls for: “HIGH PRESSURE WILL BUILD NORTH OF THE WATERS THROUGH TONIGHT. WEAK HIGH PRESSURE WILL REMAIN OVER THE WESTERN ATLANTIC THROUGH WEDNESDAY. A WARM FRONT WILL LIFT NORTH ON THURSDAY…THEN A COLD FRONT WILL SWEEP THROUGH ON FRIDAY. HIGH PRESSURE WILL BUILD IN SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY.”

The wave drought might end this week, with two potential wind swells on tap for Folly Beach. A nice swell showed late Sunday afternoon, with clean, side shore conditions as the tide got high late Sunday as a cold front moved offshore. It was quick. A “one and done,” deal, but really fun.

As high pressure moves offshore to our north early week, we will see residual wind-swell blowing into our beaches on Tuesday as wind goes more easterly. It won’t be epic, but look for surf to average waist to stomach high on Tuesday early morning and late in the day. Tuesday will see small surf mid-day on the low tide.

Wednesday sees a new weather pattern begin to emerge as a warm front sets up to lift over our area late week. Waves should stay pretty small Wednesday not picking up until Thursday afternoon as the tide starts to come in around dark. Look for choppy south wind swell in the waist high range, building.

Friday sees a cold front approaching, as surf getting big and choppy as south wind swell fills in chest high plus, with strong south-west winds.

The weekend looks to be a wash, as a cold front passes the area, and winds go offshore. Pushing swell away from our beaches. If this changes, we’ll update the forecast.

Weather should get milder this week, so it could be a good week to get some surf.

Inaugural Icebox Open stays cool.

Folly Beach, Feb 20, 2012 Ocean Surf Shop’s inaugural Icebox Open took place at The Washout on Sunday, Feb. 19 with a full slate of competitors who were not afraid to brave the 54 degree water and the 65 degree air temperature. Really , it stayed fairly mild all day for the competition, which was held at the 17th Block walkover of The Washout in stormy, rainy weather. There was a full slate of men’s competitors, and a dozen brave women hit the surf for the inaugural event.

The competition started in less than stellar conditions. Despite the National Weather Service’s local Marine Weather Forecast calling for Sunday’s (Feb. 19) seas at 4 to 6 ft. , the surf started small in the morning in the thigh to waist high range. As the heats progressed, and the competition grew stiffer, the surf started to pick up. When the men’s and women’s finals kicked into full gear, so did the surf. Sets around chest to shoulder high started to finally show at The Washout.

When all was said and done, Kyle Busey took the men’s first prize trophy and a purse of $1000. Grace Muckenfuss won the women’s $400 purse and an Icebox first place trophy. Busey also received “Hottest Wave” honors after pulling a hands-free 360 air in the final after the waves had picked up.

It was a great day at the beach, and Ocean Surf Shop would like to thank all who participated, especially the panel of ESA judges. Nancy and Marshall with The Eastern Surfing Association (who volunteered their time and ESA equipment) were true professionals, and helped the competition go off without a hitch.

The final men’s and women’s winners and prizes are as follows:

Men’s Open Finals:

1) Kyle Busey ($1000 cash, 1st place Ice Box Open trophy)

2)Blue Spivey ($400 Ocean Surf Shop gift card)

3) Patrick Evers ($200 Ocean Surf Shop gift card)

Good afternoon, this is J. with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report for Sunday, Feb. 20 at 2:00 p.m.

Waves at the Washout are side-shore choppy and only are running ankle to knee high.

We had a low tide at 12:40 pm., and it’ll be coming in all afternoon, high at 6:49 p.m.

The Edisto Buoy is reading 6.9 ft. at 8 seconds, but that swell is headed south towards Florida and Puerto Rico.

The National Weather Service Marine Weather Forecast calls for: ”

HIGH PRESSURE WILL BUILD NORTH OF THE

WATERS THROUGH TONIGHT. WEAK HIGH PRESSURE WILL REMAIN OVER THE

WESTERN ATLANTIC THROUGH WEDNESDAY. A WARM FRONT WILL LIFT NORTH

We’ll see high angled north-east wind swell this afternoon in the knee to thigh high range in sloppy conditions, with current from north to south. We should see building south wind swell starting Wednesday afternoon, and building through late week into the chest high range in choppy conditions. http://www.oceansurfshop.com/report/

Good morning, this is Bates with your Icebox Open surf report for Sunday, Feb. 19 at 8 a.m.

The Ocean Surf Shop Icebox Open starts this morning at The Washout. Come on out, say hello to us and to our friends at The Eastern Surfing Association, and watch some of Charleston’s best surfers compete to win prizes valued at over $2000.

The wind is blowing onshore out of the east/north-east this morning 15 to 18. It’s been going slack during passing storms.

Waves at the Washout are semi-choppy, and running thigh to waist. There is an occasional stomach high set.

Low tide will be at 11:53 this morning, and it’ll be coming in all afternoon, high at 6 p.m.

The Edisto Buoy is reading 4.6 ft. at 7 seconds, so there is some swell out there, and we are thinking the surf will pick up later this afternoon on the incoming tide into the stomach high range, while winds are forecast to become variable. Could get some size this afternoon.

The National Weather Service Marine Weather Forecast calls for: ” A WARM FRONT WILL LIFT NORTH INTO THE AREA TODAY AS COMPLEX LOW PRESSURE EVOLVES OVER THE SOUTHEAST STATES. A COLD FRONT WILL PUSH THROUGH THE AREA LATE TODAY AND THIS EVENING. HIGH PRESSURE WILL BUILD IN MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY. UNSETTLED CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY.

Look for surf to pick up to stomach high plus this afternoon on the incoming tide, before a cold front pushes through late today, blowing surf down for Monday. It looks like there could be some small, but rideable surf through mid-week, as unsettled weather keeps winds on-shore for mid-week.

It is raining at the beach, and should stay cloudy, with a high of 57 as of report time. Look for rain, clouds and a high of 65 today.

Sunset it at 6:08 p.m.

Water temperature is around 56*.

Have a great morning, and we’ll update the phone report this afternoon.
