Good morning, this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.
The bridges are pretty icy this morning on the way out here to Folly, so if you are on the roads, be careful. They are working on them now, but don’t be surprised to see them closed. We will be closed today so our employees don’t have to get on the roads.
Surf at the Washout this morning is thigh to waist high with the surf way up in the rocks at the high tide. Waves are side-shore and semi-choppy with some drift.
Winds are north/north-east at 15 to 18 knots, expected to be north at 20 to 25 knots this afternoon, and we should see drifty, blown out surf this afternoon with side-shore winds.
We have a high tide as of report time, and low tide will be at 2:51 p.m. The next high tide will be at 9 p.m.
Edisto buoy is reading 7.2 ft. at 7 seconds in high angled north-east wind swell. Most of the swell is pushing past the beach.
We see surf averaging waist high today as a low pressure system approaches our coast from the south. We have freezing rain, snow and sleet and drifty conditions. Extreme winds becoming gale force on Thursday will certainly rough up the surf and side-shore conditions will continue, making the surf unfavorable.
Your NOAA Marine Weather Forecast for our marine area calls for: “A strengthening storm system passing offshore will bring significant impacts from winter weather to the area today into this evening. Arctic high pressure will continue through the rest of the week, then a cold front could affect the area early next week.
We have freezing rain out here this morning, and the roads are a mess. It is 30*. Look for a high of 31* with freezing rain, sleet and some snow.
Water temperature is down to 47*. That’s about as cold as I have seen it in these parts.
Sunset is at 5:25 p.m. and sunrise will be at 7:22 a.m.
