Side/off-shore and semi-clean.

Time of Report: 8:30 a.m.
Wave Forecast: Waist-to-stomach. A bit bigger, occasionally.
Traffic: Not bad.
Parking: Lots.
Dangers: Cold on the way.

Good morning this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for your Winter Solstice, December 21 at 8:30 a.m.

It’s the shortest day of the year. So go surfing, then take a nap.

Waves at the Washout this morning are thigh-to-waist high with stomach sets. Occasionally a little bigger.

Winds are north/north-east – side/off-shore – at 20 to 25 knots, and surf zone is very drifty and semi-clean.

We see north-east winds all day today at 10 to 25 knots, and surf zone will be semi-choppy and drifty later today.

Tide is low today at 11:58 a.m., with high tide to follow at 5:46 p.m.

The Edisto Buoy is reading 10.5 feet at 8 seconds in an east/north-east wind swell. A lot of this swell is passing by Folly, but there is something to ride today.

We have north-east wind swell in the water today, with what looks to be semi-choppy, very drifty conditions. It is – however – rideable. A series of low-pressure systems look to cross over Florida from the Gulf and into our marine area. This should create north-east wind swell today and rotate more on-shore to produce significant east/south-east swell Thursday. Expect top spots to reach the head high range tomorrow. On-shore winds will be a factor, but surf should be big regardless. If the frontal boundary passes by Thursday afternoon, we could have a quick clean-up late day Thursday. Look for a cleanup on Friday as winds rotate strong out of the west with cold artic air coming with it. A very cold high-pressure system moves in for your Christmas weekend with strong off-shore winds and small surf through early next week, so get it Thursday and Friday if you can.

Your NOAA Marine Weather Forecast for our area currently calls for: “A series of low pressure systems will bring unsettled weather to the region through early Friday. Arctic high pressure and a very cold air mass will build in thereafter and prevail through early next week.”

It’s a chilly and wet 45* this morning with clouds and rain-showers in the area. Look for the temperatures around 54* today with clouds and showers in the forecast.

Water temperature is now 56*, and will go down after this weekend’s cold snap.  Brrrr.

Sunrise is at 7:17 a.m., and sunset will be at 5:17 p.m.
