Dangers: Santa is coming

Good morning, this is Luke with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Saturday, Dec. 21 at 8:30 a.m.

Surf at Folly this morning is knee-to-waist high. It should build some on the incoming tide, but it has poor form.

Winds are north/north-east at 15 knots, and surf zone is side-shore, pretty drifty and semi-choppy.

Look for winds to rotate north-east and increase late in the day.

We had a low tide as of report time, next high tide will be at 3:42 p.m.

The Edisto Buoy is reading 5.9 ft. at 6 seconds in a short period wind-swell.

Forecasts show an almost tropical style low moving out of the Gulf of Mexico and developing near our coast later this afternoon, building swell significantly Sunday and into the Christmas work-week. Some models show this system moving south-and-east of our waters through the holiday week, and pushing in some swell through Christmas Day, when high pressure begins to take over our weather pattern. This should be producing bigger easterly ground-swell but we’ll need to keep an eye on the wind. Winds will likely be strong from the north/north-east and blowing if this low stays close and to our south, is as currently predicted. We will keep you posted, and keep an eye on the flags. There looks like there MIGHT be surf late week as well, as we see high pressure set up off of the Mid-Atlantic states later in the holiday work week.

Your NOAA Marine Weather Forecast for our marine area calls for: “A coastal trough will remain offshore today while high pressure prevails to the north. Strong low pressure will impact the area tonight into early next week, bringing periods of significant rainfall and strong winds. High pressure will return by the middle of next week"

It is a cold 49* with sun this morning. Look for a cool, windy day with clouds moving in a high of only 57*.

Water temperature is now 56*

Sunrise is at 7:15 a.m. and sunset will be at 5:15 p.m. Tomorrow is the winter solstice, and it’s the shortest day of the year.

Thanks for checking in with Ocean Surf Shop.
