Good morning, this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Friday, Dec. 20 at 8:30 a.m.
Surf at Folly this morning is knee-to-thigh high. It should build some on the incoming tide, but it has poor form.
Winds are north/north-east at 15 knots, and surf zone is side-shore, pretty drifty and semi-choppy.
Look for winds to rotate north-east and decrease some, at 10 to 12 knots. Surf should stay semi-choppy today.
We had a low tide as of report time, next high tide will be at 2:33 pm. We have a low tide at 8:51 p.m.
The Edisto Buoy is reading 3 ft. at 10 seconds in a long period east/south-east ground swell. With a high-angled east/north-east wind swell wind swell reading 4.3 ft at 4 seconds. Some easterly swell in the water this morning, and it should get a little bigger as the tide comes in.
Forecasts show an almost tropical style low moving out of the Gulf of Mexico and developing near our coast Saturday afternoon, building swell significantly Sunday and into the Christmas work-week. Some models show this system moving south and east of our waters, and pushing in some swell through Christmas Day, when high pressure begins to take over our weather pattern. This should be producing bigger easterly ground-swell but we’ll need to keep an eye on the wind. Winds will likely be strong from the north/north-east and blowing if this low stays close and to our south, is as currently predicted. We will keep you posted, and keep an eye on the flags.
It is a cold 40* with sun this morning. Look for a cool, windy day with lots of sun, and a high of only 57*.
Water temperature is now 56*
Sunrise is at 7:15 a.m. and sunset will be at 5:15 p.m. Tomorrow is the winter solstice, and it’s the shortest day of the year.
Thanks for checking in with Ocean Surf Shop.
