Good morning, this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Saturday, August 14 at 8:30 a.m.
The Governor’s Cup of Surfing takes place at The Washout starting at 8 a.m. today. Hopefully we see you out there!
Surf at the Washout this morning is thigh-to-waist high at the morning’s lower tide. It is shutting down some at low tide. It should get a push with the incoming tide. There is definitely some small ground-swell in the water for the contest today.
Winds are slack, and surf zone is super clean.
Look for winds to stay calm this morning, going south-east at 10 to 15 this afternoon. We should see some surface chop later today.
We have a high tide at 1:07 p.m., and a low tide at 7:20 p.m.
The Edisto buoy is reading 3.3 ft at 8 seconds in a medium period east/south-east swell, so it’s looking like some ground swell at the buoy, and hopefully it starts to show as the tide comes in later this morning.
The forecast has been flat for the entire work week and hopefully today will be the last of that trend. A small pulse of ground swell has started to show. This builds into Sunday as Tropical Storm Fred moves into the Northern Gulf Shores of Florida. There should be some slightly bigger swell tomorrow – Sunday – as groundswell increases overnight. There is another tropical disturbance following in Fred’s tracks, and this should enhance our swell more significantly next week, as surf picks up with onshore south winds trending upwards Monday and into the middle of next week. There should be some sort of surf all week next week, so get your chores done this weekend.
Your National Weather Service Marine Weather Forecast for our area calls for: “High pressure will prevail across the area into the upcoming weekend. A cold front will then stall northwest of the area late this weekend and early next week while Tropical Cyclone Fred moves onshore along the northeastern Gulf Coast. Fred will then weaken and move north into the Appalachians through mid week as another tropical cyclone potentially tracks toward southern Florida. Refer to the latest advisory on Fred issued by the National Hurricane Center.”
It is partly to mostly cloudy this morning. It is currently 80*. We see a high of 79* today and clouds this afternoon with a slight chance for a rain shower.
Water temperature is around 85*.
Sunrise is at 6:43 a.m. and sunset will be at 8:04 p.m.
Thanks for checking in with Ocean Surf Shop.
