Good morning, this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Saturday, May 16 at 8:30 a.m.
The City of Folly Beach is now open. Social distancing rules will be enforced. Please see the City of Folly Beach’s Web Site for more information.
We will be open from 9:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Please follow social distancing protocols when shopping.
Waves at Folly this morning are in the waist-to-stomach high range, with a chest high set in a south-easterly ground swell. Maybe a big bigger from time to time. It is pretty fun out here this morning, and there are about 5,000 of your best friends out to surf with you.
Winds are east/north-east at 5 knots, and surf is semi-clean in ground swell lines. It is starting to close out at the lower tide.
Look for increasing easterly winds chopping up groundswell surf for afternoon.
We have a low tide at 10:10 a.m., and a high tide will be at 4:25 p.m.
The Edisto Buoy is reading 5.6 ft. at 8 seconds in a south-easterly ground swell. Plenty of swell at the buoy, and we will have some surf all day.
We have a low pressure system with possible tropical development currently near the eastern tip of Florida that should develop into a tropical depression in the next 24 hours. It should send surf in for the next few days, but winds will pick up north-east for Sunday, with a possible quick clean up for Monday as the swell begins to fade, and the low moves north-east over the next two days.
Your NOAA Marine Weather Forecast for our marine area calls for: “A low pressure system is expected to develop off the Florida east coast today, then move north through early next week. A cold front will move into the area on Tuesday before weak high pressure rebuilds later in the week.”
It’s 74 today with sun this morning. Look for a high of 78 with sun and some passing clouds today.
Water temperature is around 72*.
Sunrise is at 6:19 a.m. and sunset will be at 6:12 p.m.
Thanks for checking in with Ocean Surf Shop.
