Good morning this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Saturday, September 24 at 8 a.m.
The Mermaids and Maties Festival is being held on Folly Beach today. So, make sure to drink your weight in Captain Morgan’s Rum and be somebody. And for sure realize that traffic is going to be as backed up as a pirate that’s been eating beef jerky for three months at sea.
Surf at the pier this morning is knee-to-thigh high. There is a sporadic waist high set. The Fiona swell has moved out of our swell window. It’s not going off or anything. No need to get worked up today about who dropped in on you and/or how long you’ve been a local. Not really worth arguing about this morning.
Winds are north at 5 knots, and surf zone is sides-shore, but overall clean.
We see north winds at 10 knots later this morning. Becoming easterly at 10 this afternoon. This should create some surface chop on the surf later today.
We had a high tide at sunrise. Low tide is at 1:23 p.m. High tide will be at 7:40 p.m.
The Edisto Buoy is 4.3 feet at 10 seconds in a long-period easterly swell, most of which is moving past our beaches.
The Fiona swell has faded, but the party is back at Folly with the Mermaids and Maties Festival taking place today. So yes, the traffic is backed up, and you’ll need to pull some money to walk along Center Street today. Looking ahead surf is small for the first half of the work week, but we are now tracking Tropical Storm Ian. This system could be troublesome and perhaps upset our lives a bit. Keep an eye on it. It is forecast become unruly and move north out of the Caribbean and through Florida and into our general vicinity. Kind of like your pirate stepdad did. (p.s. I love my stepdad). Either way, keep an eye on it for late next week. Surf could pick up in a short-period north-east wind swell with no long period ground swell in the forecast. “Earl and Fiona, thank you – signed, A Guy who can read a buoy.”
Your NOAA Marine Weather Forecast for our area currently calls for: “High pressure will persist through the weekend. A cold front will push across the region Monday before high pressure quickly returns. Tropical low pressure could impact the region mid to late next week. Refer to the latest advisory on Tropical Storm Ian issued by the National Hurricane Center.”
Water Temperature is around 81*.
It’s beautiful at the beach this morning. It’s 66* and sunny. Look for a high of 76* with sun today. It is perfect beach weather for the Mate a Mermaid Festival.
Sunrise is at 7:08 a.m., and sunset will be at 7:15 p.m.
Thanks for checking in with Ocean Surf Shop.
