Good morning, this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Sunday, May 17 at 8:30 a.m.
First picture in the surf report series: “Birds Mourning Corn”. Circa 8 a.m., May 17, 2026. Somewhere on Center Street
For those not barfing this morning, the surf is knee-to-thigh high. There is an occasional waist set. It is soft and weak, but decent for the longboard.
Winds are light and variable early, and surf is kind of bumpy. We see south-east winds at 10 knots this afternoon. This adds some chop to the surf zone.
High tide is at 9 a.m. Low tide is at 2:47 p.m., and tide comes in at 9:15 tonight.
The Edisto Buoy is reading 2.6 feet at 9 seconds in a medium period easterly swell, with a small south/south-east wind swell pushing some small waves to the beach.
NOAA forecast reads: “High pressure will extend across the region through the week.”
With high pressure set up over the mid-Atlantic we will see fun trade wind swell this week with hot temperatures, so it’s a really good time to wax up the longboard and get ready for summer. It’s not going to necessarily be epic, but some fun surf this week. Get some before the flat days of summer take over.
It’s 75* and going from sun, to clouds, to sun again on and off. It’s humid out here. Look for a high of 80* and warm weather all day.
Water temperature is around 73*.
Sunrise is at 6:19 a.m., and sunset will be at 8:13 p.m.
Thanks for checking in with Ocean Surf Shop.
