Good morning, this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Thursday, March 18 at 8:30 a.m.

Surf at The Washout this morning is knee-to-thigh high.

Winds are from the south/south-west at 5 knots. Surf zone is pretty clean and waves are weak. There is heavy fog in the area, so sorry about the pictures this morning.

Look for winds to pick up significantly from the south this afternoon at 15 to 20, with gusts to 30-plus late day as a strong cold front moves through our marine area.

We will have a high tide at 11:54 a.m., and a low tide will be at 5:46 p.m.

Virtual buoy readings are showing 1.8 ft. at 5 seconds in a short-period south wind swell.

Winds will increase and surf should be choppy and drifty this afternoon as a cold front and severe weather rides along the passing frontal boundary. Surf will be chopped up with poor form and growing size this afternoon. We will likely see some severe weather at the beach and across the tri-county area this afternoon. Surf should clean up some on Friday, and it might not be a bad day to get out in the surf, as winds are forecast to go west, then north-west by Friday afternoon. A big north-east swell is predicted behind a cold front Saturday into Sunday, with a significant drift down the beach but some size in a high-angled north-east wind swell.

Your National Weather Service Marine Weather forecast calls for: “A strong cold front will push offshore tonight, followed by a reinforcing cold front Friday evening. High pressure will then build in from the north and prevail through the middle of next week.”

It is currently 65* with fog and dense cloud cover. Look for a high of 70* with wind, thunderstorms, rain and a tornado watch this afternoon. There is a small craft advisory in effect this afternoon.

Water temperature is around 61*.  You’ll be OK in a 3/2 and maybe booties.

Sunrise is at 7:24 a.m. and sunset will be at 7:29 p.m.

Thanks for checking in with Ocean Surf Shop.
