Good morning this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Thursday, May 18 at 8:30 a.m.
Surf is looking pretty bad this morning. It’s around knee high with strong east/north-east winds. Swell is kind of shifting directions this morning, but should build from the east/north-east today.
Winds are east/north-east at 15 knots this morning, and surf is side-shore and about to get drifty.
Look for gutsy easterly winds by afternoon at 20 to 25 knots, with increasing surf size but choppy and drifty conditions with a small craft advisory in effect.
We had a high tide around 7:30 a.m., and low tide is at 1:30 p.m. You’re next high tide will be right around 8 p.m.
The Edisto Buoy is reading 2 feet at 7 seconds in a south/south-east swell, but that’s about to flip around to the east/north-east once this low gets forming off-shore.
A low pressure system forms just offshore today into Friday, and high angled north-east wind swell should be the call today and Friday. It’ll be drifty and semi-choppy with most of your swell-headed past Folly, but there will likely be something to ride Friday, even if not great. Surf looks to clean up and drop rapidly in size by Saturday morning, with small south-west wind chop returning Saturday night into Sunday as a cold front moves through the marine area Saturday night. High pressure sets up early next week, and we see surf increase again in a drifty north-east wind swell. Honestly, head to Florida early next week, for some fun, rideable surf.
Your NOAA Marine Weather Forecast calls for: “High pressure will build south into the Southeast today, meanwhile an area of weak low pressure will develop just offshore. A cold front will push across the forecast area Saturday night into Sunday, followed by the return of high pressure through the middle of next week.”
Its 72* and cloudy at the beach this morning. Look for rain and storms today and lots of wind. Temperatures will stay about the same for your Thursday.
Water temperature is 75*.
Sunrise is at 6:19 a.m., and sunset will be at 8:14 p.m.
