Good morning, this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Thursday, May 24 at 8:30 a.m.
Surf at the Washout is running knee to thigh high. There is an occasional waist high set. Swell is closing out at the morning’s low tide and doesn’t look great early.
Surf might get better as the tide comes in early afternoon, but not expecting too much.
Winds are south/southwest at 10 knots. Surf is side-shore and semi-choppy.
We expect south-east winds at 10 knots all day, and surf should remain choppy.
Low tide will be at 10:34 a.m., and high tide will be at 5:05 p.m.
The Edisto buoy reading 2.6 ft. at 8 seconds in medium period east/south-easterly swell.
After we have enjoyed a lot of swell over the past three weeks, we see smaller surf today through Friday. Look for a tropical low pressure that could become tropical storm or depression this weekend. The system moves into the Central Gulf of Mexico late in the Memorial Day Weekend. High pressure to our east and the low to our west will bringing more choppy south wind swell LATE Saturday, building much bigger Sunday into early next week. This swell should linger into the middle of the work week. So there is more surf in the forecast for the holiday weekend and into the last week of May. Get in the water before the doldrums of summer set in.
Your NOAA Marine Weather Forecast for our marine area calls for: “High pressure will remain to the east through Friday while a trough of low pressure lingers to the west. Developing low pressure over the Gulf of Mexico will slowly move north toward
the central Gulf Coast this weekend, possibly lingering through early next week. This pattern will maintain higher than normal rain chances across the area.”
It is sunny with high clouds this morning and 77*. Look for a mostly cloudy day with a 20% chance of rain and a high of 81*.
Water temperature is now up to around 80*.
Sunset is at 8:18 p.m. and sunrise will be at 6:14 a.m.
