Good morning, this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report for Thursday, May 9 at 9:15 a.m.
I didn’t even oversleep and this report is still late. Sorry y’all. You’re not missing too much. Let me lay it out for ‘ya.’ya:
Ocean surf shop pre tips for Thursday and Friday. The friendly and curious Folly explorers are starting to trickle back in. We have a “cold” front moving through today/tonight, so it will be cool and crisp this weekend, but warm. It’s been hot. The beach is still relatively uncrowded for weekdays. This is the time of year it’s great to be a local. Not trying to preach, but anything that keeps you off the beach this time of year during a weekday sucks, because for the next three weeks the weather is sick, the water is just warm enough. If we get a swell in the next three weeks, hit it. Everyone is finishing up school and work before summer, and during the weekdays it’s relatively uncrowded. I’m sorry, did I give away too many local secrets? 🙂
Come by and check out our new summer T-shirts and Hats. We have every color and design from Beau-Gator to Playa’ Hater.
Surf at Folly around knee-to-thigh high at the pier. It’s mush and rolling with a side-shore west wind around 10 knots. It’s fairly clean with a push for the longboard, and quite frankly with the hot wind and the hazy, humid conditions, I’m surprised no one is taking an early morning glide.
We see south-west winds today at 15 knots, and a side-shore, semi-choppy/getting-choppy surf zone drifting slightly up the beach from west-to-east.
We have a high tide at report time. Low tide at 3:24 p.m., high tide is 9:52 p.m.
The Edisto buoy is reading 3.3 feet at 6 seconds from the SSW.
Small summer SSW wind-swell is on tap for today, and we do expect it to get choppier this afternoon. We have a cold front moving through today which will continue small, dribbly south wind swell though Thursday – maybe Friday. This weekend looks flat, with “cooler” perfect beach weather. The weekend will be PACKED, so get your favorite playlist ready and put your subwoofer on for heavy bass so you can annoy everyone in traffic. Haha. Best chance for waves will probably be late Monday into Tuesday of next week as a storm system approaches and stirs up some short period south wind swell. If it pans out, we’ll likely all try to remember if we are brave enough to surf in lightning storms agan.
Your NOAA Marine Weather forecast for our local waters calls for: “A cold front will approach the area tonight, then move offshore Friday. High pressure will prevail for the weekend into early next week. A storm system could affect the area by the middle of next week.”
Water temperature is hovering right around 73*, so spring suits and jackets are the call for mornings.
It’s currently 74* and partly cloudy. Today we see a high of 83* and thunderstorms are on the way. It’s going to get pretty stormy this afternoon.
Sunrise 6:26 a.m., Sunset 8:06 p.m.
