Time of Report: 8 a.m.
Wave Forecast: Waist-to-chest. A bit bigger, occasionally. Building.

Parking: Yes.
Dangers: Tropical Storm Warning.

Good morning, this is Bates with your morning, Thursday Sept. 26, “Start-of-Helene” swell report.

Thanks to Carolina Surf Brand for hosting movie night at the Terrace and introducing us to East Coast Surfing Legend Sid Abruzzi. What a story and legacy that man has. Check it out. We appreciate you hosting, Chad Davis.  It was nice to see such a great crowd.

We are under a Tropical Storm Warning, so there’s that. Flooding, wind, down tree limbs. Hope Florida makes it out Ok. Good luck down there.

Surf at the pier is waist/chest about to build to head-high-and-over. It’s choppy and chunky. Video tells the story better than pictures this morning. Get some! (Not recommended for children or the elderly with heart problems … ahem). We expect it to get bigger and choppier as Hurricane Helen skirts to our west/north-west this afternoon and overnight.

Winds are south-east – straight onshore at 15 to 20, expected at 30 to 40 by tonight. This wind will trend south-west as the storm departs our weather window Friday evening.

Low tide is at 9:30 a.m., and high tide high tide will be at 4:04 p.m. The next low tide is at 10:24 p.m.

Edisto Buoy is reading 6 feet at 6 seconds in a short-period, building south-east wind swell.

We have building surf from Helene with strong south winds expected to increase. Don’t be a hero, be a zero. It’s likely going to be heavy and choppy. Helene looks to come onshore in the Panhandle of Florida and sweep inland of our marine area. As we are in the north-east quadrant of the periphery of the storm, we will experience tropical storm conditions and some strong on-shore/side-shore winds trending south, then south-west. We could hope for a clean-up Friday after Helene moves north and west, but it’s a tricky call. Saturday might be clean, but swell will fade fast as this storm and strong wind-swell has not a lot of ground-swell ahead of it, or behind it. Saturday could be really fun. Keep that in mind.

Your NOAA Marine Weather Forecast for our Marine area calls for: “Hurricane Helene is forecast to move inland across portions of Florida and Georgia later today into Friday. Multiple impacts are expected across our area today and tonight. Drier weather then arrives later Friday and persists into next week. Refer to the latest advisory on Helene issued by the National Hurricane Center.”

Its cloudy with shower and humid. It’s around 78*. Look for a high of 81* and rain today with strong storms possible and FLOODING!

Sunrise is at 7:10 a.m., Sunset 7:14 p.m.
