Good morning, this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Wednesday, August 21 at 8:30 a.m.
A shout out to the friends and family of Folly surfing legend Scott Hantske. Rest in Peace. You’ll certainly be missed, and we’ll always remember the indelible mark you left on the surf-scene at Folly.
Also, Surfers Healing will be taking place at the Pier all day tomorrow. That’s August 22 at the Pier. Come check it out, and help kids with Autism live the surfing life.
Surf at The Washout this morning is in the knee-high range. There is a slightly larger set occasionally. It is weak, and best for a longboard if you need to get wet. It’s closing out a bit at the morning’s lower tide.
Winds are light from the west and surf is clean early this morning.
Look for winds from the south-west mid-morning at 5 to 10, then rotate south at 10 to 15 early afternoon. Surf gets choppier as the day wears on.
We have a high tide at 12:41 p.m. and a low tide at 6:24 p.m.
The Edisto Buoy is reading 2 ft. at 7 seconds in a medium period east/south-east wind swell and a short period south-east wind wave.
High pressure controls our weather for the next several days, and we see small south wind swell in the forecast. South wind swell could pick up some Friday, but it looks like we’ll see mostly long-board or grovler-board waves this week. Tropical Storm Chantal formed overnight several hundred miles off of the North-Eastern Seaboard, and is supposed to loop into the Central Atlantic later this week. Chantal is not looking like much of a wave-maker for our beaches, as it is a long way off-shore. There is a tropical wave moving westward near the Caribbean Islands that could spin-off a home-grown system over the weekend, but right now swell is not forecast. We’ll keep an eye on it.
Your NOAA Marine Weather Forecast for our marine area calls for: “Atlantic high pressure and an inland trough will prevail through late week. A cold front will then push into the area this weekend before stalling over or just south of the area through early next week.”
It’s 81* with sunshine this morning. Look for a high of 87* with a 20% chance of rain this afternoon.
Water temperature is around 85*.
Sunrise is at 6:45 a.m. and sunset will be at 7:59 p.m.
Thanks for checking in with Ocean Surf Shop.
