Good morning, this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Friday, December 21 at 8:30 a.m.
Welcome to the Winter Solstice. It’s the shortest day of the year. The days will get longer from here.
Waves at the Washout are head high plus and blown out.
Winds are south at 30 to 35 knots. Lots of chop and drift. “Victory at Sea” conditions.
Look for south-west winds at 25 to 35 knots today, and very choppy, drifty surf, perhaps winds will switch west by dark, but it’s going to blow all day. Keep an eye on the flags.
Tide is going out. Low tide is at 12:34 p.m., and high tide will be at 6:35 p.m.
The Edisto buoy is reading big this morning. We have a long period swell 9 ft. at 10 seconds from the south/south-east and a south/south-westerly wind swell 12.8 ft. at 6 seconds.
A strong storm system impacts our area today as it lifts north, pushing up a big south/south-west wind-swell/ground-swell combo. Lots of wind today from the south-west, and choppy surf all day. There’s a chance for some west in the winds late afternoon, but keel an eye on the flags. Perhaps it will clean up late. We see high pressure returns to our marine area for Saturday with small leftovers on Saturday morning. Sunday and into the holiday work week looks to be small, with a chance for another south wind swell pushing later in the next work week as another front approaches our marine area.
Your NOAA Marine Weather Forecast for our marine area calls for: “A strong storm system will lift north of the region by tonight. High pressure will return this weekend, with a weak cold front to pass through Sunday night, followed by high pressure again into the middle of next week. A frontal system will then impact the region late next week.”
It’s 62* and sunny at the beach. There is a wind advisory today. Look for a high of 62*, hazy sunshine and wind today.
Water temperature is 56*.
Sunrise is around 7:18 a.m. and sunset will be at 5:17 p.m.
Thanks for checking in with Ocean Surf Shop.
