Labor Day, 2018

Choppy, bumpy.

Time of Report: 8:30 a.m.
Wave Forecast: Knee to thigh. Waist sets. Occ. stomach.
Traffic: Pretty busy.
Parking: Not too much.
Dangers: Labor Day.

Good morning, this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Monday, September 3 at 8:30 a.m.
We hope everyone has a safe and happy Labor Day as we wind down the busy summer season at Folly.
Keep in mind beach re-nourishment has taken place at the Washout, but it has moved south, so the Washout is open. The Washout is not really breaking too well right now it seems, so might want to head to another spot that has not yet seen re-nourishment
Surf at the Pier is knee to thigh high with a waist high set. Occasionally there is a bigger set to stomach high.
Winds are east/north-east at 10 to 15 knots, and surf is bumpy and choppy.
Look for easterly winds today around 15 to 20 knots this afternoon and choppy, drifty surf later today.
We are coming off a low tide early this morning, high tide will be at 2:22 p.m. The next low tide will be at 8:54 p.m.
The Edisto buoy is reading 3.9 ft. at 9 seconds in a south-east swell mixed with a short-period south-east wind swell.
There is some swell at the buoy this morning, so surf should be OK on the incoming tide morning. Expect easterly winds at 15 to 20 knots this afternoon. There is now T.S. Gordon (moving into the Gulf of Mexico) moving near the Florida Keys that is creating the slightest bit of swell off-shore for the next few days. We should see continued on-shore flow with high pressure to our north well off the Mid-Atlantic coast. We could see a tropical wave bring more wind-swell later in the work week. Winds trend east this week, so there will be a wind swell component at the beach chopping up the small swell. We also have Tropical Storm Florence is in Central Atlantic and could add a ground-swell component to our surf late in the work week and into the upcoming weekend, with a lot of action predicted off the Coast of Africa after Florence. Overall surf looks small but rideable at the right sand-bars/tides over the next few days at least, with bigger surf ahead over the weekend.
Your NOAA Marine Weather Forecast for our marine area calls for: “High pressure will remain the dominant feature through much of the week. A tropical disturbance is forecast to become a tropical cyclone over the Gulf of Mexico as it moves west toward the central Gulf Coast. Another tropical wave could impact the area late in the week and this weekend.”
It’s 80* and sunny this morning. Look for a high of 87* and sunshine with a chance of scattered showers later in the day.
Water temperature is 85*.
Sunset is at 7:41 p.m. and sunrise will be at 6:55 a.m.
