Good morning, this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Monday, Jan. 8 at 9 a.m.
We will be on normal operating hours from 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. today.
The water temperature is 42*. Don’t know if that’s a record, but it is as cold as we have seen it here in at least eight years. It won’t warm up until mid-next week, and then probably into the mid/upper-40s*.
Surf at the Washout this morning is knee to thigh high with a waist set possible as the tide comes in this morning. It is semi-choppy/choppy. There is some drifty down the beach.
Winds are north/north-east at 10 to 12 knots, and are expected to stay north/north-east at 10 knots today.
We just had a low tide at daybreak, and high tide will be at 12:58 p.m., and low tide will be at 7:13 p.m.
Edisto buoy is reading 3 ft. at 9 seconds in easterly swell and east/north-east wind swell combo.
We have knee to thigh high choppy surf this morning in easterly swell. We should see east/north-east wind swell and medium period east/south-east trade-wind swell fill in Tuesday thought Thursday. East/north-east winds should keep things choppy, but it should be rideable for the first time in a while. Swell continues through the end of the week as winds trend south. Colder High pressure fills in after a frontal passage on Saturday and winds switch back to north-east Saturday night, and south swell fades. Temperatures should moderate some beginning today, which will be nice.
Your NOAA Marine Weather Forecast for our marine area calls for: “Arctic high pressure will finally pull offshore today, allowing for a significant warming trend through the week. A coastal trough will persist in the nearby Atlantic early this week, with low pressure to pass into the Gulf of Mexico through mid-week. Another region of high pressure will develop to the north, before a cold front crosses the area late week. Colder high pressure returns next weekend.”
Arctic high pressure has FINALLY moved off-shore today, so it’s downright balmy at 38* with sun and clouds mixed this morning. Look for a high of 56* and melting snow under partly cloudy skies today.
Water temperature is down to 42*. That’s about as cold as I have seen it in these parts.
Sunset is at 5:30 p.m. and sunrise will be at 7:22 a.m.
Thanks for checking in with Ocean Surf Shop.
