Good morning, this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Sunday, Jan. 7 at 10:30 a.m.
Folly Beach is open for business. Bridges and roads are good, just drive slowly. We are opening at 11 a.m. (until 5 p.m.) today and at 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. tomorrow.
The water temperature is 42*. Don’t know if that’s a record, but it is as cold as we have seen it here in at least eight years. It won’t warm up until early next week, and then probably into the upper-40s*.
Surf at the Washout this morning is knee to thigh high in choppy, short period north-east wind waves. There is a lot of drift down the beach.
Winds are north/north-east at 15 to 18 knots, and are expected to stay north/north-east at 10 to 15 knots today.
High tide will be at 12:05 p.m., and low tide will be at 6:19 p.m.
Edisto buoy is reading 4.9 ft. at 6 seconds in high angle north-east wind swell.
We have thigh high choppy surf this morning with a slightly bigger set this morning in high-angled north-east wind waves. This fades for Monday, but we should see another east/north-east wind swell and medium period south-east swell fill in Tuesday thought Thursday. Fading some on Friday, before high pressure fills in after a frontal passage and south-west winds on Saturday. Temperatures should moderate some beginning Monday, which will be nice.
Your NOAA Marine Weather Forecast for our marine area calls for: “Arctic high pressure will remain over the region into early Monday. The high will then move into the Atlantic as a coastal trough develops offshore. Low pressure will pass into the Gulf of Mexico through mid-week, as another region of high pressure develops to the north. The remnants of the low might pass nearby Thursday, with a cold front to impact the area late in the week. Colder high pressure returns next weekend.”
It is sunny and 29* with a wind chill of 21. It’ll stay cold again today with a high of 39*.
Water temperature is down to 42*. That’s about as cold as I have seen it in these parts.
Sunset is at 5:27 p.m. and sunrise will be at 7:22 a.m.
Thanks for checking in with Ocean Surf Shop.
