Mon. Sept. 11

A blown out, drifty suicide mission.

Time of Report: 8:20 a.m.
Wave Forecast: Head to over-head.
Traffic: None at all.
Parking: Plenty.
Dangers: Flooding, winds, out of control surf.

We are going to go ahead and close up the shop today. We opened up, but it’s a ghost town out here at Folly Beach, so we want our staff to get home safe. See you tomorrow. Good Morning. This is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Monday, Sept. 11 at 8:20 a.m.
We opened up this morning, but we are going to close because it is a ghost town out here!
Checking at the Washout this morning, and surf is way overhead and cloud-breaking. Super choppy and drifty. It’s a Kamikaze mission out there today, and I would not recommend it.
There is a lot of swell, but it’s very windy, drifty and rainy.
Winds are north/north-east at 35 to 45 knots, and surf is side-shore and choppy. Look for east winds at 30 to 40 knots today and very choppy surf.
Look for flooding in low-lying areas mid-day at high tide.
High tide is at 12:15 p.m., and low tide is at 6:38 p.m.
The marine weather forecast is predicting 4 ft. seas in THE HARBOR, so needless to say, the Edisto Buoy is reading 16.1 ft. at 11 seconds in long period east/south-east ground swell.
Hurricane Irma will move into south-west Georgia, and we sit in a tight pressure gradient between Irma to our south, and high pressure to our north. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the people of Florida and hoping for the best for them. Please be careful here in Charleston, as Irma is bringing us some strong winds, flooding and storm surge, but Folly Beach is open for business. Swell fades into the head high range for Tuesday with south-west winds at 15 knots, so plenty of surf still in the forecast for tomorrow. Hurricane Jose is doing a circle in our swell window as we speak, and once the wind moves out early tomorrow, expect more small ground swell mid-week, building late in the week and into your weekend. Hurricane season is in full effect right now.
Your NOAA Marine Weather Forecast for our marine area calls for: “Irma will move northward into southwest Georgia and Alabama tonight. Warmer weather will return during the middle of the week and persist until the weekend. Refer to the latest advisory on Irma issued by the National Hurricane Center.”
It is 68 with rain and heavy winds this morning. Expect rain all day with a high of 78*. There is a tropical storm warning in effect.
Water temperature is around 81*.
Sunset is at 7:35 p.m. and sunrise will be at 6:58 a.m.
Thanks for checking in with Ocean Surf Shop.
