Good morning, this is Chad with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Saturday, May 19 at 8:15 a.m.
The annual ESA Ocean Surf Shop points contest will be held today at the Washout. Come on out and support the amateur competitive surfing here in the Lowcountry.
Surf at the Washout is running waist to chest high with head-high sets.
Winds are south at 15 to 20 knots, and surf is super bumpy, disorganized and choppy.
We expect south winds to lay down around 11/12:00 today and then jump back up to 15 to 25 knots this afternoon making surf choppy and bumpy all day.
We have a high tide at 12:53 a.m. today, and a low tide will be at 5:05 p.m.
The Edisto buoy reading 5.9 ft. at 7 seconds in medium period south-easterly swell and southerly wind swell combination.
We still have plenty of swell at the buoy and plenty of surf in the forecast for today, with bumpy choppy conditions this afternoon as winds blow south at 15 to 20 knots. This trend continues for Sunday, and we expect more surf this weekend as high pressure builds to our east and pushes in a decent trade-wind swell into the weekend. Surf should trend smaller to start the work week, but we should see continued rideable surf through the middle of next week. Tropical weather models are also showing a low moving into the eastern GOMEX off of the Yucatan Peninsula for your Memorial Day Weekend bringing more south wind swell. Conditions won’t always be perfect with south/south-westerly winds over the next several days, but there is some decent surf of varying quality in the forecast for the next three days or so. Get in the water before the doldrums of summer set in.
Your NOAA Marine Weather Forecast for our marine area calls for: “Low pressure will linger just west of the area through Saturday. Atlantic high pressure will then prevail into the middle of next week before low pressure likely returns later in the week.”
It is raining and 72* as of report time. Look for a warm day with a high of 76* with rain and thunderstorms.
Water temperature is now up to around 78*. Shed all that neoprene. We have TONS of rash guards at the shop.
Sunset is at 8:14 p.m. and sunrise will be at 6:17 a.m.
Thanks for checking in with Ocean Surf Shop.
