Bumpy. Choppy later.

Time of Report: 8:15 a.m.
Wave Forecast: Knee to thigh. Waist. Building.
Traffic: Moderate.
Parking: Plenty.
Dangers: None.

Good morning, this is Bates with your Ocean Surf Shop surf report and forecast for Saturday, January 27 at 8:30 a.m. .
According to the City of Folly Beach we cannot hold the Icebox Open until after February 14, so we will plan to hold the contest during one of the last two weekends of February and the first two weekends of March. Sorry for any inconvenience of confusion this might have caused.
Surf at the Washout this morning is knee to thigh high with waist high (plus) sets at the morning’s low tide. It is closing out a bit.
Winds are north at 5 to 8 knots. Surf is fairly clean but bumpy, early. We expect winds to clock north-east at 10 knots then east at 10 to 15 knots this afternoon. Look for choppy surf later today.
The day’s first low tide will be at 9:55 a.m., and high tide will be at 3:54 p.m.
Edisto buoy is reading 5.9 ft. at 4 seconds in a combination of east wind swell and building south-east swell at 3.9 ft. at 8 seconds. So there is some building swell at the buoy.
We see surf building on the incoming tide in east/south-east winds swell. Look for surf to average waist to stomach high (plus) in east/south-east wind-swell ground-swell combo with some chop from an easterly wind. We expect a Bermuda high type of system in the Western Atlantic for the weekend with decent on-shore east/south-east fetch as high pressure moves off the mid-Atlantic Coast and into the Western Atlantic. Surf should build chest-high (plus) Sunday as a cold front approaches with moderate south-easterly winds. Swell looks to continue and clean up some for Monday as a low moves from the Gulf of Mexico east across northern Florida and offshore of our waters to start the work week, and colder winds trend off-shore. This should keep some decent surf in the forecast for late today and into early next week.
Your NOAA Marine Weather Forecast for our marine area calls for: “High pressure will prevail today, then a frontal system will impact the area Sunday and Sunday night. Cooler high pressure will then return for the first part of next week, before moving into the Atlantic during the middle of the week. A cold front may affect the area next Friday.”
It is 52* this morning with clouds. Look for clouds today and a high of 64*.
Water temperature is up, it’s now 50*. You’ll still need a 4/3, booties, gloves and a hood if you want to surf this weekend.
Sunset is at 5:45 p.m. and sunrise will be at 7:17 a.m.
Thanks for checking in with Ocean Surf Shop.
